Athens is the I-65 Limestone stop, not a suburb of Decatur and not Huntsville-with-a-different-name. The courthouse square and Athens State (the oldest college in Alabama) sit in town. Calhoun’s campus is part of how people actually move through here. Elk River is north. The Tennessee Valley Old Time Fiddlers Convention and the Athens Storytelling Festival fill the square; that is when we refuse to leave a Class A on Washington Street.
Delivery is to Athens houses, Limestone County pads, and people staging for Joe Wheeler or the Elk. Pickup is still Dathan’s shop at 4529 Winchester Road in New Market. From there you take the parkway and I-65, or we run the unit to you. Do not plan to “swing by Huntsville” as if that were the address.
Limestone Sheriff’s Rodeo weekends and football Fridays at the high school are real calendar items. If you are using Athens as the jump to Wheeler or as the home base after a Nashville run, say which. The roads are different jobs.
